Grain Trailer Safety Guide
As with all equipment, it is important to follow safety guidelines when operating a grain trailer. So, to help minimize the chances of injury to yourself or others, here are some safety guidelines for you to follow before and after getting on the road.
Remember that at H&P Trailer Leasing you can find all types of trailers to rent, including grain trailers. For your convenience, we have stores in Flowood and Olive Branch, MS, as well as in Monroe and Hammond, LA. We also proudly serve those from Memphis, TN, and Baton Rouge, LA.
The Oil
Oil is what keeps your engine parts healthy and running smoothly. Running your truck with low oil levels can make your engine break or seize, and the same goes if the oil is dirty. Depending on how frequently you’re on the road, create a schedule for an oil change, and before hitting the road, ensure to top it off if needed.
The Tires
It is said that your tires should be replaced between 5 to 6 years regardless of their appearance. While you certainly want to follow this general rule, it is more important to regularly inspect them, and swap them as soon as they show signs of wear and tear. This applies to both your truck's and your grain trailer's tires.
Apart from replacing worn-out tires, it is crucial to keep them at their appropriate air pressure. Traveling with underinflated or overinflated tires not only makes them wear out faster than they should but also can result in blowouts.
Lights
Light bulbs are one of the smallest and most fragile components, but one of the most important. So, make sure that all your lights are working. While you may be used to inspecting your truck’s lights every now and then, don’t forget to cross-check that your grain trailer’s brake, park, and turn lights are functioning.
Weight Capacity
Drivers should always know the manufacturer's specifications and limitations on the grain trailer's capacity. The trailer should never be overloaded. It is recommended to stay 10% below the maximum capacity.
Loading
During loading, remember to set the truck's brakes and to chock the wheels to prevent tipping and movement of the grain trailer. Also, weight distribution is important for safely hauling your trailer. A grain trailer with proper weight distribution will follow the tow vehicle well and contribute to good traction and steerability. It is highly recommended that 60-65% of the total load be placed in front of the trailer axles.
Secure The Load
Lastly, it is important to cover your cargo. Tarps can be used to prevent products from falling out of the grain trailer, but don’t place them near sharp edges. In addition, secure it tightly so that the wind cannot get under the edges.
